Wherever one may look in Massachusetts, the member facilities which comprise the Massachusetts Assisted Living Facilities Association are generally among the finest such communities in the country. More importantly, they typically maintain and deserve outstanding reputations as well-run, caring places where thousands of residents now enjoy a comfortable communal lifestyle almost unheard of just 20 years ago. New Horizons at Marlborough, LLC is a totally not-for-profit affiliate of Cummings Foundation, Inc. of Woburn, Massachusetts and is a member of Massachusetts Assisted Living Facilities Association. New Horizons at Marlborough, LLC operates a wonderful 450 resident retirement community on 30 acres at 400 Hemenway Street, Marlborough, near the Wayside Inn. New Horizons at Choate, LLC. operates a 125 resident not-for-profit community at 21 Warren Avenue, Woburn, Massachusetts. In addition to its assisted living section, the New Horizons campus in Marlborough also has two brand new apartment buildings called "The Meadows," for totally independent seniors aged 65 or older. These very large and spacious units alone, virtually surrounded by pristine conservation lands, accommodate 260 residents. All apartments offer spectacular views, abundant free (or garage) parking, and full kitchens, but each building also offers fine on-campus meals in its own elegant dining room. Visit www.MeadowsEstates.com for more information on The Meadows. All good assisted living facilities provide a wide variety of services to promote their residents freedom, enjoyment, independence and dignity. At the same time, they offer a continuum of care which should permit residents to remain in place as they age. The bonds of companionship which form so quickly among residents themselves, however, probably do more than anything else to account for the extraordinary success stories found in so many communities. Read below about greater Boston's two New Horizons, which are typical of so many excellent Massachusetts facilities for independent and assisted living. At the bottom of this page click on CONTINUE for considerable additional information about assisted living in general, and about New Horizons in particular. This section describes both (not-for-profit) New Horizons retirement communities developed by Cummings Properties. New Horizons in Marlborough is located just north of U.S. Route 20 in a beautiful country setting at 400 Hemenway Street, in Marlborough, Massachusetts. New Horizons at Choate is near historic Horn Pond at 21 Warren Avenue in Woburn, Massachusetts. New Horizons in Woburn typically has a waiting list of about one year. The recently enlarged Marlborough residence typically has only a very short waiting list, or none at all.
Just about everyone looks forward to retirement as a time to relax and enjoy life. Often, though, we get too consumed by daily responsibilities to fully relish the leisure time we've worked so hard to gain. That's where New Horizons can make quite a difference.

I wish I had come here years ago!" All residents at New Horizons have many choices of dining hours and lots of selections for entrees and side dishes, as well. Guests are always welcome to stop by for a delicious home cooked meal any day of the week. New Horizons also has full-sized homestyle kitchens available for those who might occasionally want to bake cookies, or teach a grandchild how to make Grandma's favorite spaghetti sauce or... Grandpa's Five-Alarm Chili! Try us, you'll like us

Becoming a New Horizons resident
Before a new residents move in, there are, of course some simple forms to sign, but there are no long-term leases. All residents complete a Residence Agreement which may be cancelled by the resident at any time with two months' written notice, or immediately following a resident's passing. Although monthly fees for residents are normally adjusted each January in proportion to cost-of-living changes in the Consumer Price Index, New Horizons at Marlborough is presently offering all new residents a guarantee of no increases of any sort in their basic monthly fee, for at least the first two years of residency! We are aware of no other community anywhere in New England that offers this very unusual rate guarantee. Respite stays For individuals in need of temporary supportive services while recuperating from a hospital stay, or during rehabilitation, or while a family member may be away, New Horizons in Marlborough offers a respite program. This program is available to individuals or couples, with a minimum 30-day stay and maximum 60-day stay. Respite residents are provided furnished suites with kitchenette, bath with walk-in shower, emergency response system, and cable and local telephone service. The program fee includes a Standard Assisted Living Service Plan for one, with personal care provided by Care Solutions, the on-site certified and MEDICARE approved home health agency. Additional care is always available, and a licensed nurse is scheduled on site 24 hours per day, seven days a week. Included are three delicious meals served
daily in an elegantly casual dining room, weekly housekeeping and
linen service, and all regular community activities, as well as all
special programs. There is a 140-seat stained-glass chapel and religious
services on site for all faiths. Hearthstone Alzheimer Care
Hearthstone Alzheimer Care, Inc. is a prominent, internationally-known firm which provides care for people with Alzheimers disease in several states. It operates divisions at both Woburn and Marlborough New Horizons. Occasionally, when the need arrises, residents transfer from New Horizons to the Hearthstone residence - typically in a relatively seamless transition. New Horizons provides meals for Hearthstone residents and, of course, provides the residents' suites. It does not in any way, however, supervise or direct Hearthstone management or caregivers.
Dr. John Ziesel, recognized as a pioneer in the Alzheimer treatment field, runs the Hearthstone programs. The main phone number of their executive offices in Woburn Massachusetts is 781-674-2884. Hospice Residence A section of newly remodeled suites within New Horizons' main community is now reserved for residents with terminal conditions which do not require nursing home care. Many of these residents will, however, have supplemental Hospice nursing, counseling and physician care through one of our local licensed Hospice agencies. In New Horizons' Hospice suites, residents will have around the clock help with the activities of daily living. Residents in New Horizons' Hospice suites typically seek to maintain their quality of life in their remaining months or years. Palliative care is provided as needed by the caring staff of Care Solutions Inc., our on-site, Medicare approved, home care agency. Traditional physical therapy and whirlpool therapy are very helpful in maintaining and restoring mobility. The facility's large lap swimming pool is also well-heated, and is immediately adjacent to the new Hospice Suites. Another very important part of New Horizons continuum of care is the special program known as Wayside Suites for other residents requiring scheduled and spontaneous care on a 24/7 basis. This program is intended to serve residents who do not need someone stationed full time at their bedside, but who will need someone to respond almost instantly from time to time at any hour to provide help with the activities of daily living, but not medical services of a registered nurse, for instance. Residents in Wayside Suites might typically arrange for three hours daily of scheduled assistance and an additional three hours a day for unscheduled "spontaneous" service. All residents wear an emergency response bracelet which they routinely use to alert their assigned caregivers. |
